Ballard Launches Next-Gen Fuel Cell for City Buses at Busworld 2025

Ballard Power Systems has announced the debut of its latest fuel cell module for urban transit buses, the FCmove®-SC, which will be showcased at Busworld 2025 in Brussels from October 4–9.

The new module is designed to lower lifecycle costs, simplify integration for bus manufacturers, and enhance operational efficiency for transit operators, building on Ballard’s proven FCmove platform.

“The FCmove®-SC addresses the industry’s biggest challenge — closing the cost-of-ownership gap with diesel — while offering operators improved performance and durability,” said Kevin Colbow, Senior Vice President and CTO at Ballard.

Key Enhancements

  • 30% higher end-of-life system power and greater durability.

  • 25% boost in volumetric power density with integrated DC/DC packaging.

  • 25% higher radiator outlet temperature (up to 75°C) for easier thermal management.

  • 40% reduction in total part count, improving reliability and serviceability.

The FCmove®-SC delivers up to 75 kW peak power, optimized for steady in-service output and longer thermal margins. Operators can expect up to 25,000 hours of service life under standard duty cycles, alongside reduced cooling demands and improved energy efficiency.

Smarter Integration and Services

By consolidating the DC/DC converter and power controller inside the module, the FCmove®-SC minimizes external connections, making installation and diagnostics simpler. Ballard is also rolling out enhanced fleet services, combining predictive analytics with its FCServiceCloud platform to cut downtime and lower support costs.

Safety and Reliability

The system incorporates a redesigned PEM stack enclosure that passively mitigates hydrogen risks, reducing reliance on conventional safety sensors. Ballard’s track record includes over 850 buses in European service and nearly 100 million kilometers of operational experience, which directly informed the new module’s design.
